LAZY EYE AND STRABISMUS (EYE TURN)

Although there are multiple causes of Amblyopia or Lazy Eye, one of the most common is an Eye turn, also known as Strabismus. An Eye Turn causes either double vision or leads to suppression, which is the brain’s way of ignoring the information from the turned eye to prevent the double vision.

Suppression leads to Lazy Eye (amblyopia) over the course of time. Lazy Eye, or Amblyopia, causes poor or indistinct vision in an eye that is otherwise physically normal.

Another frequent cause of amblyopia (lazy eye) is anisometropia. Anisometropia means that the two eyes have significantly different lens power needs. Often one eye does not need any lens compensation, while the other may be significantly farsighted. Anisometropia is a condition which is frequently overlooked in general screenings because the eyes appear straight and, as long as both eyes are open, the individual may have good eyesight. However, the brain is often suppressing (ignoring) the information from the one eye.

Lazy Eye problems are not solved by glasses alone since the problem lies in the brain, which has not developed the ability to process the incoming visual information adequately.

Eye Turns or Lazy Eye can cause the following difficulties:
Struggles in sports like baseball, football, or volleyball
Clumsiness
Eyes which don’t move together

Vision Therapy can help improve Lazy Eye by training the eye alignment and rehabilitating the brain-eye connection.
